2009 Elusive Welsh Open

Rest Bay, Porthcawl
10 - 11 October 2009
Harry Cromwell, Jo Dennison & Toby Donachie triumph in the 2009 Elusive Welsh Open
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 October, 2009 : - - Saturday morning the surfers were greeted with blue skies, light winds and chunky 3ft conditions. Early on intentions were high as the surfers proceeded to destroy the waves, posting some very high heat scores to advance into the next rounds.

Spectators lined the beach front and competition area to witness the best of the UK surfing talent. The arrival of the Red Bull girls handing out much needed energy juice and giving the athletes winnings, plus running commentary by Tom Pope, Rob Blythe & Tom Anderson kept the crowd and surfers entertained.

With half the competition completed, with smaller conditions and a new swell arriving, contest Director Bob Blythe and Elusive’s Nick Clewer decided to postpone the remainder of the event to the following day.

A total comparison to the previous day, Sunday morning saw driving wind and rain but bigger surf as the competition got under way. Conditions were quite difficult but never less the surfers were still posting high scores and pulling off big moves to try and get a slice of the £1000 on offer.
As the finals loomed the rain stopped and the sun began to break through and the crowd started to gather to witness the finale to a great event.
All the finals were hotly contested, all surfers putting in big turns and long rides, but there can only be 1 winner.

The Saturday night party at the Fairways Hotel went down a storm as local band Jasper played to a full and appreciative crowd. For a 4th consecutive year Elusive have pulled off a great competition, a big shout out to the Christian Surfers, Welsh Surfing Federation, Welsh Coast Surf Club, Bob & Anne Webster-Blythe, Stuart Bentley, DK Surfboards, Surfboard Tracker, Fairways Hotel, Jasper and Bridgend Council for making this event a success.
